Lead-Based Paint Inspection and AssessmentCOURSE DESCRIPTION In this five-day course you study and practice the complex HUD guidelines for sampling lead paint. You learn the pros and cons of paint chip sampling versus using x-ray fluorescence (XRF) paint analyzers. You use that knowledge when you evaluate and practice with XRFs. You meet the California Department of Public Health (DPH) and U.S. EPA requirement for inspection and risk assessment training if you attend the entire course and pass the exam on the final day. On the first day we cover background information about lead and its uses in buildings, health effects, regulations, and respiratory protection. During the next four days, some of the most experienced lead inspectors in California cover the laboratory and field methods used to analyze coatings for lead. You also review interim controls—temporary measures used to reduce lead hazards. You participate in elaborate hands-on workshops, where you take paint chip, soil, and dust samples; use several types of XRF analyzers; and conduct a mock risk assessment. You'll use the required HUD Guidelines course textbook and some standard EPA course materials, and you'll also receive several hundred pages of material developed and copyrighted by UC Berkeley. Many other schools try to use our materials because they know our materials are the best. No other school even comes close to matching the number and quality of our instructors. The best materials and the best instructors make for the best value in lead training.
