Title: Mindfulness: Promoting Health and Safety by Being in the Moment

Speaker: Dr. Jessica Drew de Paz

As scientists demonstrate numerous benefits associated with practicing mindfulness (a state of being present with focused attention), a mindful revolution is sweeping our nation. Dr. Jessica Drew de Paz will cover an overview of UC Mindful Health & Safety, which offers a new, complementary paradigm to create healthier, safer workplaces across a variety of industries. Participants will have an opportunity to experience a brief mindfulness exercise, and to hear preliminary results from a pilot study conducted with nurses at UC Irvine Medical Center. The presentation will conclude with a bit of time to welcome your valuable feedback.

On completion of this webinar participants will be able to:

  • Explain how distraction/inattentiveness are associated root causes of injuries
  • Engage in a mindfulness exercise
  • Summarize research studies pertaining to mindfulness
  • Share an overview of the “UC Mindful Health & Safety” research

Dr. Jessica Drew de Paz is a clinical psychologist with a background in mindfulness, a state of being present with focused attention. Jessica has 20 years of experience within the University of California system, where she has rendered psychological services, led diversity efforts, and overseen health and safety training. Currently, Jessica serves on the UC Risk & Safety Training team, and she leads the UC “Mindful Health & Safety” Center. In collaboration with UC Irvine’s Environmental Health & Safety/Risk Services department and UC Irvine’s Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine, she is investigating the potential for a Mindful Health & Safety program to improve workplace health and safety outcomes across a variety of industries.
