Title: An Overview of Occupational Epidemiology and the Healthy Worker Effect

Speaker: Erika Garcia, PhD candidate in the Division of Environmental Health Sciences, UC Berkeley


In this webinar, Erika Garcia will provide an overview of occupational epidemiology and the Healthy Worker Effect.



On completion of this webinar participants will be able to:


  • Gain an understanding of the purpose of occupational epidemiology
  • Become aware of exposure assessment methods in occupational epidemiology
  • Become familiar with typical study designs used in an occupational epidemiology
  • Develop a basic understanding of the Healthy Worker Effect



Erika Garcia is a PhD candidate in the Division of Environmental Health Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley. Her dissertation research focuses on occupational epidemiology, utilizing data from the United Autoworker-General Motors study, which includes an occupational cohort of workers in automobile manufacturing. She has evaluated the Healthy Worker Survivor Effect in the cohort and is using the results in epidemiologic studies on exposure to metalworking fluids and cancer incidence. Prior to her doctoral studies, she earned a Master's in Public Health from UC Berkeley in 2011 and worked with the Environmental Research Group at the Cancer Prevention Institute of California (CPIC) until 2014. Ms. Garcia’s research experience during her time with CPIC includes work with nail salon workers in the San Francisco Bay Area and an assessment of the association between air pollutants and breast cancer in Californian women.
