Title: Violence in the Health Care Workplace - Research and Policy Update

Speaker: Dr. Robert Harrison


Dr. Robert Harrison, will discuss how many health care workers are at an increased risk for workplace

violence (WPV). This webinar will update attendees on the scientific basis for effective interventions in

health care workplaces and the new CalOSHA standard.



On completion of this webinar participants will be able to:


  • Identify risk factors for WPV among health care workers
  • Understand the effective interventions that can reduce risk of WPV
  • Describe the elements of the CalOSHA standard for WPV in health care



Robert Harrison MD, MPH is Clinical Professor of Medicine at UC San Francisco and Chief of the Occupational Health Surveillance and Evaluation Program at the California Department of Public Health. He is the associate director of the UCSF Occupational and Environmental Medicine residency program, program director of the NIOSH-funded Occupational Health Internship Program, and teaches at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health. Dr. Harrison founded the UCSF Occupational Health Services in 1984, where he has diagnosed and treated thousands of patients with work-related injuries and diseases. He served on the California Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board, and has provided scientific and technical expertise in the development of many CalOSHA standards. He has investigated numerous outbreaks of occupational injuries and diseases in California and nationwide, and works closely with NIOSH and other federal agencies on the translation of scientific research into policies that protect workers.
