COEH webinars take place on the first Wednesday of each month at 10:30am PST.  All webinars are approximately one hour in duration.


The goal of the COEH webinar series is to raise awareness about current issues of health and safety at work and to share updates on the latest research in occupational and environmental health within the community.

Title: Smoke is Smoke: The Effects of Marijuana Legalization in the Workplace

Speakers: Merril Lavezzo and Mayra Miranda

Policy Analysts at CDPH, California Tobacco Control Program


The legalization of marijuana has the potential to disrupt California’s tobacco control successes. Participants will learn about workplace policies relating to marijuana smoke exposure, and the key ways the marijuana industry may impact California’s tobacco control successes. Participants will also learn about California’s landscape of marijuana use and how the convergence and co-use of tobacco products with marijuana affects public health.


Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity, the learner will be able to:


  • Compare the health effects of secondhand exposure from tobacco smoke and marijuana smoke
  • Analyze key ways the marijuana industry may disrupt California’s tobacco control successes
  • Summarize California’s landscape of marijuana smoking use and describe how the convergence of tobacco products with marijuana affect the smoking landscape
  • Describe workplace policies regarding marijuana smoke exposure



Mayra Miranda joined the California Tobacco Control Program (CTCP) in August 2017 as a Policy Analyst in the Strategic Planning and Policy Unit. Prior to joining CTCP, Mayra worked at the Madera County Public Health Department as a Community Health and Wellness Assistant in their Tobacco Control Program for more than four years . Mayra earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Women’s Studies from California State University, Fresno in 2011. Mayra found her love for public service while serving as an AmeriCorps member and Family Advocate with First 5 Madera County while in school and following graduation.


Merril Lavezzo of the Strategic Planning and Policy Unit at the California Tobacco Control Program (CTCP) graduated from the UC Davis Masters of Public Health Program in 2013. Prior to her work in tobacco control, Merril served as a health promotion specialist at the UC Davis Student Health Center, where she oversaw the sexual wellness health education program. Merril also served as an AmeriCorps VISTA for the Oregon Public Health Department.

CE requires additional registration to complete payment and evaluation to receive credit. The cost for CE credit is $30 per webinar.

After you sign up for the free webinar through our provider Zoom, click on the blue Register button to sign up for CE at the COEH-CE registration page.


You will need to remember your user name (email address) and password to return to COEH-CE after the webinar and complete the evaluation. Your certificate of completion will be e-mailed to you.


If you did not sign up for CE in advance after listening to the live webinar, you can click on the blue Register button and follow the instructions below to pay and to complete the evaluation.
